Is it Good To Submit Every Blog Post to Social Bookmarking Sites?

Every blogger has a wish to be receiving hordes of comments from the thousands of visitors every day. Many posts, before getting published expect a good number of people reading it and sharing the post with other bloggers and people talking about the posts in their own blogs and liking back to them. Ahh, how good it sounds and how best we try to make it possible! But, it is not always possible that every post gets the recognition that you expect. Why does this happen?

Not every post attains the highest quality in a blog and not every post is supposed to be a landmark in your chosen niche. So, in order to let people know about the post, What every blogger tends to do after clicking “Publish” button is, Submit the post to bookmarking websites and expect people to roll in. But, We need to know some answers before doing so. The questions are:

  1. How good is it to bookmark your own sites and posts in the social bookmarking websites?
  2. Does it do more harm than good?
  3. How to avoid getting infractions from the bookmarking sites because of your own submissions?

We are all aware that Social Bookmarking sites are loved by Google and other search engines because of the links to the killer content on the world wide web, also include some junk which gets indexed. So, the fastest way in order to get our articles and keywords(long tailed ones) into the eyes of search engines is to submit our posts to the social bookmarking websites. What I generally tend to do is, after writing a very good post(that’s my assumption, I ask none if it’s a ‘very good post’ , readers have to decide) like this one(ahem!), I generally submit this post to at least 5 SB sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Propeller, Yahoo Buzz! and a random one.

How good is it? It’s bad and underline this one, It’s Very Bad. The whole purpose of Social Bookmarking is not pushing our own content onto the SB sites, but to share those interesting posts which the readers suppose would impact one or the other. But, why would any one reading my blog post submit it to the SB sites, even though they find it interesting and amusing. Not many readers around do that job even though they get the information for free. And some also feel that information is their birth right and generally demand for explanation.

So, I have to do the job on behalf of my readers too. In doing this, at times I(My Blog) may get banned by the SB sites. The SB sites can look under your user name with which the same blog’s posts are only being submitted and woof! Your site/blog would be banned. But, this is a risk which bloggers do take. One piece of advice stays here: No matter what happens, only submit Pillar Articles which would be loved by one and all. Submit the post after getting at least a few comments so that the conversation can be kept alive. Let the momentum start.

General rules of the thumb are:

1. Do not submit your every post. Submit only killer and pillar articles.

2. Do encourage other members on the Social Bookmarking websites by commenting on their submissions and reviewing them.

3. Feel free to make friends on the SB sites and request them to make a submission of your post and write a small review. You may not believe it but, many of the top members of the SB sites oblige for the requests if they find the post to be genuine and interesting. So, that’s a job you need to do perfectly.

4. Massive Submission is always equal to SPAM for Social Bookmarking sites. So, never do that. Don’t submit 30 of your starting blog posts in a flash and expect visitors to come. Go slow.

5. As usual, Quality Content does bring visitors. So, research the topic you are gonna write.

If you are using WordPress as your CMS then it is easier to let the major search engines know that you have created a new post by using Google XML Sitemap Generator tool which is very easy to use and is explained in detail by Harsh Agarwal at ShoutMeLoud. Have a look at it. It just takes 2 minutes to download and integrate with your blog, but saves hours of your time later.

I presume you have understood what the downside of submitting your own blog posts to social bookmarking websites would reap. It’s always good to expect some readers would utilize the bookmarking features and share the posts.

Now, you can spare a moment and share this post with your friends or bookmark it using the buttons provided below. Also share your experiences and views whether or not you agree in submitting one’s own posts to multiple social bookmarking websites.

  1. Nice post buddy. The most common mistake new blogger do is they submit each and every article to social bookmarking website and later on they end up banning website on particular website. One should always write articles targeting social bookmarking website and then they should submit it else chances are very high that you will be ending up banning your website.
Every social bookmarking website likes particular articles for example STumble upon like articles with lots of images… Moreover you also need to find a way to promote them.

@Harsh: Thanks for the comment pal. I do agree with your point of view and I emphasize on not submitting the own articles to the SB websites.

  3. Ruchi says:

I do agree with Harsh, even earlier I used to publish all articles on social sites , now i stoped. Nice blog .

    1. Team Nirvana says:

@Ruchi Even though SB sites approve the self submitted or promoted links, it’s always better to maintain a good ratio of promoting others’ posts to our posts. I maintain a ratio of 10:1, which helps me in turn in the long run.

Saya ingin tahu, apa social bookmarking plugin yang menjadi andalan anda? ShareThis atau Sociable? Ada yang menggunakan plugin atau memasang code (untuk website dan blogspot platform) dari Onlywire?

I’m actually guilty of overdoing social bookmark submissions but so far, I have not been banned yet by any of them. Except stumbleupon but I think it’s really not banned as stumbleupon only accepts an X number of submission from your own site and won’t accept anymore after you have reached the limit. The other social bookmarking sites so far would accept just about every link you submit.

      I agree with you Ark.

Submitting in an ad hoc manner is safer than submitting each and every post done. Point taken that SU blocks after certain number of own submissions. Never faced it in my concern as of yet :)

  6. [...] Do not submit your own blog posts to Social Bookmarking websites without targetting other interesting articles around. You may get banned. http://teamnirvana.com/blog/is-it-go…ing-sites.html [...]

Great, this is what every one should follow. You do not want yourself to be spammer in the eyes of social networking sites as well as search engines.

You have really nice SB plugin

    1. Suneel says:

Yes Sanjay. Why to be over curious and in the meanwhile get banned by Social Bookmarking sites which are the fastest way to get indexed by search engines!!

I am currently using SexyBookmarks plugin for the social bookmarking icons.

If you create an account on the social bookmarking sites and submit your own posts (not all, just the select great ones as mentioned before) but also submit useful posts from other people’s sites, wouldn’t that wash away any suspicion (plus actually make you useful to the bookmarking site).

  13. Kristy says:

Thanks for the great article. I realize now that I have been using the social bookmarking sites all wrong. WHOOPS! I will now start using those sites the way you have suggested. Live and learn, right?!
